Ministering with those who are excluded in mind, can allow us to see aspects of our communities that we would not otherwise see. Having an awareness of what the common experiences are in your community of ministry will allow the church to better integrate and create compassionate community. Loneliness, for instance, is a common experience of which every pastor must be fully aware. The biggest challenge from this book (aside from internal reflection of fears) is that we must be willing to recognize, as Jean Vanier does, that there are common experiences, and also necessary experiences. Loneliness is a sign that society is losing their sense of belonging as the necessary mediation. However, belonging is a necessary mediation of the individual and the society. As Jean Vanier explains, loneliness is a common human experience.

It is important to note that the author sources the foundation of these fears “are to be found in the fears experienced in childhood.” We need to challenge ourselves and consider what it is that we fear as believers and Christian communities.Īlong with this discussion of fears, there was a discussion surrounding the tension of loneliness and belonging as human experiences.

Fears are explained throughout this book as apprehensions which seek an object upon which to fixate – which often land upon those with disabilities.
